Lymphedema diagnosis

Hey Survivor Sisters. I've been going to physical therapy for my recently diagnosed lymphedema and it's been great. I'm 5 years cancer free and I wish I had had this physical therapy 4 years ago. I thought I would get relief for, what I've been told is incurable lymphedema, and at least keep the slight swelling in check. The swelling in my hand has actually been reduced by 10 cm so far. The best part is the massages I've been getting that are breaking up the scar tissue at the surgery site. It…See More

About Me:
Last year was a tough year, but with the help of God and my Village I made it through. I was diagnosed in March 2007 with breast cancer. It was discovered in my annual mammogram. I had a biopsy, surgery, chemo and radiation. I have triple negative, no estrogen receptor (er), no progesterone receptor (pr) and no human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (her-2). I've heard that this type is more prevalent in Black women.

I'm done with treatments now and have had another mammo with a call back that was scary. My doctor is closely monitoring my blood and one of my levels was a little high. He called it background noise. So I go back in 2 months to get my blood checked.

In the meantime I'm living for today. That's all I've got.

In August my blood levels came back normal!!!!! Wooo Hoooo!! Thank You God.

I'm registered to ride my bike in the L.A. Marathon next May.

Had another blood test Friday and so far so good. With triple negative bc, after 2 years and no recurrance, then I'm pretty much home free.

OK, in March 2012, it will be 5 years out. Thank You God. My cancer doc, the beloved Dr. Arzoo, explained to me how to count my survival date. It's the day I was diagnosed. He suggested I travel and I've taken him up on that. Our last trip was to South Africa and it was fun, fun, fun.

The best part is the massages I've been getting that are breaking up the scar tissue at the surgery site. It is bringing the circulation back and the radiation burns are starting to fade. I am getting feeling back at the surgery site, too. These are great extra perks that I didn't expect. Especially after so much time has passed.

So Sisters, if you haven't already done so, take advantage of the services offered by your hospital, if you can. Next month I'm going to a free lymphedema lecture, to learn more about the most recent treatments, risk reduction practices, and precautions.

MY BREAST CANCER JOURNEY

In March of 2007 we began a huge remodel on our home. The master bedroom and bath along with the front driveway and the entire backyard was to be ripped out and redone. I went for my annual mammogram at the end of February 2007, and was called back. As I waited to make an appointment for the second mammogram, I felt disappointed in myself for not having discovered the lump sooner. The radiologist showed me a lump the size of a quarter. He couldn’t tell me if… Continue

Hi Denise,
Wonderful to meet you! I have to get my bike to the shop and have it fixed. Maybe I can ride it when the desert heat goes away, and get stronger.
Fighting with my fibromyalgia daily puts me behind so much in being physical.
I am also hoping to start riding horses again this fall! I am so excited! I live in a condo, and did not think about the fact that living on the second floor ((duh me)) that I would have to take my bike down the stairs each time I wanted to ride:)
Accepting that phrase from my surgeon was very hard, "now you have tommorow" is amazing. Working very hard at catching up on what I gave up on.
I am an LA baby, born in Huntington Park!
Prayers to you and yours,
Laurie

i'm scared shitless for this friday's 1st adventure in the "chemosphere"..but my bodhisattva warrior spirit is w/ me, and i'm praying that chemo will be alot easier than that bloody anesthesia and pain killers!!! during my 2 surgeries, even the anti-nausea meds made me sick. so, we shall see what we shall see. it's always great to be in contact w/ you, so thank you very much.

Hi Denise! Great, great news for you in August! Way to go! There was a Jazz festival in Santa Barbara last week. You and your husband would have loved it (tell him I said Hi!). We've already got clearance from them to do a big Survivor Celebration event there with them next year at the start of Labor Day weekend. Wouldn't it be great if we could get hundreds of survivors up to Santa Barbara for a weekend-long celebration of life!
