Would you take a pill to erase bad memories?

This was the question I pondered today as I read about a drug which has been developed to erase painful memories. If you have seen the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which starred Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey, you will have seen the fictional characters use a technique to erase memories of each other when their relationship turned sour.

At various times in my life when the pain of some trauma has threatened to overwhelm me, I have had that familiar thought of just… Continue

Gratitude

Gratitude

What did you notice?

The dew snail;

the low-flying sparrow;

the bat, on the wind, in the dark;

big-chested geese, in the V of sleekest performance;

the soft toad, patient in the hot sand;

the sweet-hungry ants;

the uproar of mice in the empty house;

the tin music of the cricket’s body;

the blouse of the goldenrod.

What did you hear?

The thrush greeting the morning;

the little bluebirds in… Continue

Happy Thanksgiving

One of the things I’m grateful for in my life is that I feel part of a wonderful support community and now I am thrilled to have just become a part of this community too. I live in Ireland, so while we don’t celebrate the day officially here, I still feel as if I am sharing in something of the spirit of the day thanks to all my lovely American friends who are celebrating Thanksgiving. So, as I think of you all out there, getting ready for Thanksgiving, tuning into all those things and people… Continue

A.J. Ali's 2009 Thanksgiving Message

Well, it's that time again. For those of you who have known me for more than a year, you know that I have a tradition of asking my friends to take just five minutes out of their super busy schedules (how did we all get sooo busy?) this week to read my annual message of hope and thanksgiving. Although I am sending this out to everyone I know, I hope it touches each and every one of you on a deeply personal level.

This year has been an especially difficult year for many of us. There… Continue

Connecting to others through giving

Give, give, give—what is the point of having experience, knowledge, or talent if I don’t give it away? Of having stories if I don’t tell them to others? Of having wealth if I don’t share it? I don’t intend to be cremated with any of it! It is in giving that I connect with others, with the world, and with the divine.

I was very struck today while reading these beautiful words from novelist Isabel Allende from a book called This I Believe: The Personal Philosophies of Remarkable… Continue

Help rescind new guidelines for mammography

When I saw the headlines in USA Today on Tuesday morning (Nov. 17), I was in shock. I was in Washington DC attending a cancer event and caught the headlines on the way out the door. I was outraged, to put it mildly, and couldn't believe what I was reading. It went against every expert opinion or study I had come to know and trust.

After my diagnosis of breast cancer in 2004, I spent a lot of time researching how we detect breast cancer, because I had four large tumors that were not… Continue

Thankful

As Thanksgiving draws near there has been much talk on FaceBook about what we are thankful for and trying every day of November to post these thoughts. It has made me think about all the people in my life who I am thankful for especially those who made/are making my experience with cancer much more manageable. These are my supporters and Co-Survivors. They say it takes a Village to raise a Child. I think it takes a Village to Survive Cancer. So this is a big ‘Thank You’ note to my… Continue

Duck, Duck, Turkey.... by Diane Armitage

It's the time of year when families begin to gather to celebrate the holidays, which for me means reminiscing about days gone by. I'm sort of distance-deprived when it comes to most of my family these days, since nearly everyone I hold dear lives at least a plane flight or day's drive away.

As a kid, everyone I knew lived right where I did -- all of my immediate family, my aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents were within a few miles radius. Because we didn’t have a lot of… Continue
